Muso seeks muse

Lee Groves – most recently known as the production force behind Bertie Blackman’s ARIA blitzing last album – is desperately seeking cinematic inspiration. As such, you could have this composer/producer/programmer/mixer as maestro on your next short.

Having co-produced, recorded and edited sample CDs with Norman Cook, Coldcut, Pascal Gabriel, Neil Conti (Prefab Sprout/David Bowie), Miles Bould (Sting/Robert Palmer), Dave Ruffy (Ruts/Sinead O’Connor), Danny Cummings (Dire Straits/George Michael) and personal sample library products with Vince Clarke and JJ Jeczalik from Art Of Noise, Groves’ sample sounds can be heard on albums from Mirwais (Madonna) to The Crystal Method, Yello through to the Matrix soundtrack, Gary Numan to the Batman Forever soundtrack.

For three years he worked with Mark “Spike” Stent at the MixSuite, Olympic Studios, with projects including tracks for Black Eyed Peas, Depeche Mode, Aqualung, Goldfrapp and forthcoming Radiohead tracks.

This gives but a hint of the man’s diverse talent. Dazzle him with your next film idea.

Czechs & balances: Monika Charvátová reports new Czech film rebate

Czech producer Monika Charvátová, formerly of Film Studio Gatteo and now partner of US producer Steven North of Iskra Productions (Vukovar, The Last Butterfly), is in Sydney this week.

She reports that this month the Czech government has finally fallen into line with the rest of Europe by launching a 20 percent tax rebate for productions shooting in the country (Hungary had a similar incentive as early as 2004; Germany 2008 and France 2009.)

Films seeking to access the scheme must have 75 percent of their budget secured from other sources and must pass a broad test for Czech and/or European “culture point scale” – as required by the European Commission – that includes factors such as make-up of crews, script and local partners.

Locals are hoping it will help put the Czech Republic back on the map after the industry was seriously hit by a drop in ad production.

North is currently developing a project with Australian TV producer Paul Barron (Parallax), with Peter Andrikidis (East West 101, BlackJack) likely to direct.

Anode Festival
Fools Gold ‘Surprise Hotel’
Director: Matthew Lessner
Producers: Brian Davila and Tim Clark
until December 5

Surprise Hotel 2

Ah, for the days before liposuction. When it was still okay to have girls in high cut bikinis playing sax, and kissing monitor lizards on the edge of swimming pools, while dirty old men walk around in T-shirts.

The ’80s are definitely back, with ‘Surprise Hotel’, the latest clip from LA band Fool’s Gold.

The video is inspired, says US director Matthew Lessner, by “those innocent days of summer, just being proud and strong and free and soakin’ up the rays.” A perfect backdrop for the band’s unique blend of Moroccan beats, African jive and ’80s pop.

Director Lessner’s films have won awards at numerous film festivals worldwide, including Sundance, SXSW and Clermont-Ferrand. His work has been featured on Wholphin, Canal +, PBS, iTunes and MTV.

The clip will screen in Video From the Borough – six video artists from Brooklyn, NY who feature as part of the Anode arts events in Sydney and Melbourne until December 5.
