“The morning sun when it’s in your face really shows your age…”
I don’t know if Reg Livermore meant a bunch of 15-year-olds rubbing sleep from their bedheads as they duck out for a day of skating but I love the way old toons can be reinterpreted.
Check out this nice little nostalgic short Wake Up written and directed by Rex Woods, son of one of our industry’s super creative couples Rowan Woods and Jacquelin Perske.
“It’s late September and I really should be back at school…”
Film school for this one too, perhaps?

Rake
Peter Duncan
On November 4, ABC TV and writer/director Peter Duncan will launch new drama series Rake, chronicling the cases of Cleaver Green (Richard Roxburgh), a criminal defence lawyer who defends “bigamists to cannibals and everything in between”.
With a character inspired by the notorious real-life barrister and author Charles Waterstreet, we look at the rise of the antihero protagonist (think bad boy contemporaries House, Breaking Bad and the BBC’s upcoming Sherlock) and how to build empathy with them.

• Peter Duncan – writer/director (Rake, Unfinished Sky, Children of the Revolution)
Time: 5-6pm
Date: Friday, October 1

War and Appease
The Journalist, the Documentarian and the Truth
They say the first casualty of war is truth… The Child, the Death and The Truth*, directed by German journalist and filmmaker Esther Schapira, investigates the shooting and editing of a TV news item that shook the world – the death of a Palestinian boy and the wounding of his father when caught in a deadly crossfire between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian fighters. What unfolds is an intriguing examination of news practice and reportage in the age of celebrity.
– How is the relationship of trust established between newsroom and viewer?
– How are new technologies changing the images we see?
– What are the increasing pressures on networks, journalists and documentary filmmakers alike with the rise of social media?

Writer/Director: Taika Waititi
Producers: Cliff Curtis, Ainsley Gardiner, Emanuel Michael
[In Australian cinemas August 26 through Transmission Films]
Having already overtaken Whale Rider as the highest grossing New Zealand film of all time, this hilarious tale of the underdog combines finely drawn characterisation with the understated humour of Beached As; the same classical composition and mesmirising child performances of Taika Waititi’s Oscar nominated short Two Cars, One Night (one of my favourite shorts of all time) and the quirky, indy sensibility of his first feature Eagle Versus Shark.
In my Q&A last night, writer/director and actor Waititi explained that his homage to the ’80s stemmed partly from his own childhood experience but also from a filmmaker’s desire to avoid the all-too-fast obsolecence of technology; opting instead for something that was “already daggy.”
A touching coming-of-age story of family, identity and national pride – in tight pants and fluorescent tights.
See the mashup here that saw a nationalistic anthem go to number three on the charts. Guaranteed to make you smile, moonwalk and/or twirl a poi.
